About Hamilton Island

Where is Hamilton Island?

Hamilton Island is one of 74 islands in the Whitsundays, located just off the central coast of Queensland, Australia (almost halfway between Brisbane and Cairns). The world-famous Whitehaven Beach and the Great Barrier Reef are right on our doorstep. As the only island in the Whitsundays with its own commercial airport, access is easy with short, direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Cairns and good connections from other Australia cities. There are also quick 30-60 minute ferry transfers connecting you between Hamilton Island, Shute Harbour and Port of Airlie.

What is the weather like?

Hamilton Island enjoys a year round warm tropical climate, with an average temperature of 27 degrees. The maximum summer temperature is 35 degrees. The ‘wet season’ usually commences in December and extends through to March (though it does tend to differ each year).

What are the major towns nearby?

Airlie Beach - 30-60 minutes from Hamilton Island by boat (via Shute Harbour or Port of Airlie) and renowned throughout the region as the social gateway to the Whitsundays. Airlie Beach/Cannonvale has limited shopping facilities.

Mackay - 1 hour and 50 minute drive South from Airlie Beach and hosts many of the shopping facilities of a small city.

Townsville - 3 hours North of Airlie Beach and hosts all of the shopping facilities you would expect to find in any major city.
