Gatorade Battle of the Paddles on
Hamilton Island
Thursday 14 - Monday 18 June 2012
One of the world’s toughest outrigger canoe racing events, the annual Hamilton Cup is expanding and has changed its name in 2012. The inaugural Gatorade Battle of the Paddles will be held on Hamilton Island from June 14-18, in partnership with the Australian Outrigging Canoe Association (AOCRA) and more recently, Surf Life Saving Australia. Run over four exciting days, competitive outriggers will be joined by athletes from three other popular paddle disciplines; Surf Ski, Stand-Up Paddle Paddling and Board Paddling. Races include:
- Downwind surf ski races for junior, open and masters categories, including a special long-distance course from Lindeman Island to Hamilton Island’s Catseye Bay;
- Sprint Stand-Up (SUP) courses for junior, open and masters categories;
- Board paddling races for both junior, open and masters categories;
- Sprint, medium-distance and marathon outrigger races; and
- the infamous 42km outrigger marathon
Notice to paddlers:
Double ski’s are now eligible to enter the 25km Surf Ski Marathon, and the 2km SUP race has been increased to 5km.
See you on the water!
The infamous 42km Hamilton Cup marathon remains as the toughest outrigger race during this four day paddle-fest, alongside sprint and medium distance races, as well as 8km and 16km marathons. This event is not for the faint hearted.
For the first time, outriggers will be joined by three new sporting disciplines at this year’s event. Surf skiers, stand-up paddle boarders and board paddlers will also be taking on the Hamilton Island challenge.
Capped off with an exciting off-water entertainment program, the Gatorade Battle of the Paddles is an oarsome event for every type of paddler.
Surf Ski, Board and SUP event details will be available shortly, with registrations opening at the end of March.
