About Hamilton Island
Australia’s Tropical Island, in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef.
Hamilton Island is one of the 74 Whitsunday Islands, off the coast of Queensland, Australia. With a wide range of accommodation, celebrated dining and a year-round community, it offers a place to stay, live and explore one of Australia’s most remarkable coastal regions.
Explore the Whitsundays and Great Barrier Reef
Hamilton Island brings two iconic natural landmarks within reach of one island stay: Whitehaven Beach and Heart Reef. The only island in the Whitsundays with its own commercial airport, it provides a direct gateway to the heart of the Great Barrier Reef.
Discover the pure white silica sands of Whitehaven Beach, named the world’s best beach for 2025 by Lonely Planet, or see Heart Reef from the air. Sailing, snorkelling and diving experiences take guests further into the surrounding islands and outer reef.
On Hamilton Island, 25 kilometres of nature trails lead to sheltered bays and lookouts across the Whitsundays. A short boat ride away, Hamilton Island Golf Club occupies its own island, neighbouring Dent Island, with an 18-hole championship course overlooking the surrounding waters.
Stays and dining
Stay at qualia, our private adults-only luxury retreat, or enjoy the intimate adults-only beachfront setting of Beach Club. The Sundays offers a boutique coastal stay designed with families in mind, while Reef View Hotel combines spacious rooms with a choice of garden and Coral Sea views. Palm Bungalows sits among tropical gardens, and self-catering holiday homes and apartments provide space and flexibility for couples, families and groups. Both qualia and The Sundays hold one MICHELIN Key.
Hamilton Island’s dining scene spans more than 20 restaurants, cafés and takeaway options, from relaxed family meals to tasting menus celebrating Australian produce. Five Hamilton Island restaurants received Chef Hat recognition in the 2026 Australian Good Food Guide awards.
Our island community
Hamilton Island is a place where people live, work and go to school. Our residents, teams and local businesses help shape the experience, welcoming first-time visitors and guests who return year after year.
The 300-berth marina welcomes visiting yachts, with shops, restaurants and a supermarket along the waterfront. Golf buggies and the complimentary island shuttle help guests and residents get around.
Sporting and cultural events bring people together throughout the year, including Hamilton Island Race Week, Australia’s premier offshore sailing regatta. As a major employer in the Whitsundays, the island also supports a wider network of regional businesses, suppliers and tourism operators.
An island that continues to evolve
Hamilton Island has grown through decades of investment in accommodation, dining, transport and the infrastructure that supports its community.
The Ngaro and Gia People have an enduring connection to the lands and waters of this region. The island’s development as a holiday destination began in the 1970s under Queensland tourism entrepreneur Keith Williams, whose investment in the marina, airport and early accommodation helped establish its place in Australian tourism.
From 2003, the Oatley family built on those foundations, opening qualia, Hamilton Island Yacht Club, Hamilton Island Golf Club and, in 2025, The Sundays.
That evolution extends beyond new hotels. Refreshed restaurants, new guest experiences and ongoing improvements to facilities and services continue to enhance Hamilton Island for visitors, residents and property owners.
Following the transition to Blackstone ownership in 2026, investment in the island’s long-term success remains a priority. The focus is on improving the guest experience and supporting island life through thoughtful development that respects its character and environment.
Caring for our island
Around 70 per cent of Hamilton Island remains undeveloped, with bushland and coastline shaping its landscape.
Caring for this environment is part of how we operate every day. Hamilton Island has achieved EarthCheck Bronze Benchmarked status and continues to work towards improving its environmental and social performance.
