Community Safety

Hamilton Island has several services and systems in place to keep everyone safe. These include on-island Police, Fire, and Ambulance Services, ready to respond 24/7. The island is also supported by the Island Security Department and a team of volunteer firefighters.

Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS)

QAS provides on-island paramedics and helps co-ordinate medical evacuations to the mainland where required.

Hamilton Island has a full-time police presence.
You can visit the Police Office inside the Island Security building during office hours.

CCTV

Hamilton Island Enterprises uses CCTV cameras to protect HIE’s property and maintain a safe and secure environment for all Workers, guests, registered businesses across Hamilton and Dent Islands and Shute Harbour.
A CCTV and Use of Footage Policy is available from Island Security.

Hamilton Island Fire Department

The Fire Department includes two full-time Fire Officers and trained volunteer firefighters.
They work closely with the Queensland Fire Department (QFD) and receive ongoing training in:

  • Firefighting and emergency response
  • Road crash rescue
  • Breathing apparatus
  • Land search operations 

Volunteering is a great way to get involved in the community.

To become a volunteer firefighter, you must:

  • Be a resident for at least 3 months
  • Have no criminal record
  • Attend weekly 2-hour evening training sessions

Cyclone and Natural Disaster Safety

Hamilton Island can be affected by cyclones and storm tides.

Residents should familiarise themselves with the island’s Cyclone and Natural Disaster Community Awareness Guide to know how to prepare, what to do and where to receive updated information.
 
If a cyclone is approaching:

  • Prepare your home or accommodation following island guidelines.
  • If you’re unsure your home is safe, make alternate arrangements early to stay with friends or family.
