School & College

Hamilton Island State School

The co-educational Hamilton Island State School was established over 30 years ago in 1986. The student population reached 72 students in 2014 and was nominated by the North Queensland region for the ‘Jack Pizzey’ School of the Year that same year.  The school caters for students from Prep to Year Six, and a multi-age teaching philosophy is used to deliver the curriculum.

Teaching and learning encompasses the eight learning areas of the Australian Curriculum: English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities and Social Sciences, Technology, Health and Physical Education, the Arts and Japanese.

The school’s remarkable island location in the Whitsundays allows for an exciting variety of activities. All students participate in Learn To Swim programs, with a snorkelling program introduced in 2021. Students in years 4, 5 and 6 participate in the Tackers Sailing Program each year. Crossing from water-based pursuits to land, the majority of students also participate in the Hamilton Island Triathlon – Junior Series event held each year in November.

Hamilton Island State School is a ‘Reef Guardian’ school, an initiative which sees senior students join forces with other schools to brainstorm ways to protect their own backyard environment. Senior students bring these ideas back to school and champion them amongst the younger students – a way to teach leadership and model environmental values.
